Clean Ocean Access

Our Partnership

Our Partnership

Raw Seafoods has exclusively partnered up with their friends at Clean Ocean Access to support their mission to inspire and educated the community to take action through environmentally responsible behaviors that work to clean up litter and pollutants from the local coastline and beaches. This proud partnership stems from Raw Seafood's determination to set an example throughout the seafood industry of "doing something" to help protect our oceans and coastlines.

Doing something is better than nothing, and it starts with a first step. This is Raw Seafoods first step at taking action with a world-class non-profit who is passionate about the environment and taking action to protect it as much as possible. We are thrilled to be partners with Clean Ocean Access and are looking forward to an impactful partnership ahead.

About Clean Ocean Access

About Clean Ocean Access

Clean Ocean Access is a nonprofit organization with the vision of A Clean, Healthy Ocean that is Accessible to All. Since 2006, COA has worked to support a healthy coastal environment through community science and engagement. COA is focused primarily on Aquidneck and Conanicut Islands, with programs and partnerships extending across Rhode Island and the Northeast. The founding programs of CLEAN, OCEAN, and ACCESS focus on eliminating marine debris, improving water quality, and protecting and preserving shoreline access. Along with circular economy initiatives, COA is grounded by its values and strives to achieve a vision through its mission to inspire and educate the community to take action through environmentally responsible behaviors.

Vision

Clean Ocean Access (COA), a nonprofit organization with the vision of A Clean, Healthy Ocean that is Accessible to All.

Mission

Inspire and educate the community to take action through environmentally responsible behaviors.

Clean

COA's Clean program exists to educate, inspire and empower the community. Encouraging creative solutions for tackling the problem of marine debris from the shoreline and promoting environmental stewardship. Hosting a variety of year-long cleanup opportunities for the community including; core, flexible, after5, corporate and partner cleanups.

Not only eliminating marine debris at cleanups but also quantifying the debris, allowing for the data to turn into fuel for advocacy and policy change.

Ocean

COA's Ocean program exists to improve coastal water quality, starting with every drop that ends up on land and the path it takes to the ocean. Including watersheds, rivers, streams, brooks, ponds and coastal waterways, and is part of a program that include regular water quality monitoring, timely identification of pollution sources, and effective remediation plans.

Every Thursday morning COA works and facilitates a team of volunteers to collect water samples at sixteen locations that are tested for Enterococci (indicator of warm-blooded animal waste) to determine if bacteria levels are safe for swimming. Testing locations are popular swimming and surfing locations, and are not regularly tested by the Department of Health. This program focuses on the importance of water quality year-round, and how our actions on land directly impacts the health of our ocean.

Access

Limited access to the shoreline is how Clean Ocean Access started in 2006. COA manages a team of monitoring all 50 rights of way on Aquidneck Island and reports on obstruction, encroachment, vandalism, erosion and other pertinent variables. The data is used either to immediately take action for high priority issues or to keep a constant awareness of the health of the rights of ways.

Shrink Wrap Recycling

Did you know you can recycle your shrink wrap? Every spring, millions of pounds of shrink wrap used in the marine industry winds up in the landfill and contributes to marine debris in our oceans. Since 2019 COA has collected over 500,000 lbs. of shrink wrap and turned it into post consumer resin to be used in new plastic products.

Together, we can recycle shrink wrap domestically into new products for the marine and sailing industry to work towards closing the loop with this circular economy initiative.

Lunchroom Composting

Roughly $5 million is wasted on edible food each year, and it's estimated that 530,000 tons of food is wasted in school cafeterias each year. COA’s lunchroom composting program aims to foster environmentally responsible behaviors by introducing and establishing a lunchroom waste management program that sorts waste into bins for compost, recycling, and landfill. COA’s composting educators will come into school lunchrooms and teach students the importance of waste sorting and how to properly compost. If you would like to see your school start composting today, contact hshsri@cleanoceanaccess.org.

Event Sustainability

Over the last three years, Clean Ocean Access has led sustainability efforts for many large-scale events in Newport, introducing comprehensive waste management strategies for event hosts to easily divert waste from the landfill. COA’s consulting service works with your business or organization to plan, coordinate and execute sustainability protocols at your event. Defining multi-year sustainability goals and working to find the best strategies and products to achieve these goals.
