About National Fisheries Institute

The National Fisheries Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to education about seafood safety, sustainability, and nutrition. From vessels at sea to your favorite seafood restaurant, our diverse member companies bring delicious fish and shellfish to American families. NFI promotes the US Dietary Guidelines that suggest Americans include fish and shellfish in their diets twice per week for longer, healthier lives.

NFI and its members are committed to sustainable management of our oceans and being stewards of our environment by endorsing the United Nations Principles for Responsible Fisheries. Our investment in our oceans today will provide our children and future generations the health benefits of a plentiful supply of fish and seafood tomorrow.

From responsible aquaculture, to a marketplace supporting free trade, to ensuring the media and consumers have the facts about the health benefits of fish and shellfish, NFI and its members support and promote sound public policy based on ground truth science.

NFI and our members support sound public policy and nutrition information based on science.

A SHIFT TO HEALTHY EATING INCLUDES SEAFOOD AT LEAST TWICE PER WEEK

The latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage families to eat seafood at least twice weekly because of its heart and weight benefits. The Guidelines also underscore the importance for pregnant and breastfeeding women to eat more seafood to improve babies’ health. While most Americans eat an adequate amount of total protein foods, nearly all eat far too little seafood— the average American eats one serving of fish per week, while the average pregnant woman eats half a serving per week. To make the shift to eat more seafood and reap its health benefits, the Guidelines suggest choosing fish in place of meat or poultry twice each week. Fish is low in total fat, high in protein, and rich in vitamins and minerals, like selenium, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and B vitamins. At a time when Americans are told to limit so many foods, seafood is among the handful of foods Americans are encouraged to eat more often.

SEAFOOD IS ONE OF THE SAFEST PRODUCTS YOU CAN PUT ON YOUR PLATE

Seafood safety is overseen by the FDA’s Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards. The system is internationally recognized as one that successfully identifies where hazards might happen and puts in place measures to prevent them from occurring. Each step in the process is strictly monitored and controlled. HACCP successfully regulates both imported and domestic production making seafood one of the safest foods available.

SUSTAINABILITY IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE TO THE SEAFOOD COMMUNITY

What is sustainable seafood? Simply put, it is seafood caught or grown in a manner that satisfies the nutritional needs of the current generation without reducing the ability to satisfy the needs of future generations. A complete vision of seafood sustainability includes consideration of economic, social, and environmental impacts.

SEAFOOD IS ONE OF THE MOST GLOBALIZED AND DYNAMIC INDUSTRIES IN WORLD FOOD PRODUCTION

“The proportion of fish production being traded internationally makes the fisheries sector one of the most globalized and dynamic industries in world food production.” – Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Seafood is an integral part of global trade that provides not only healthy food for a growing planet but jobs and economic opportunity for millions. From farms that grow soy for aquaculture feed to cold storage facilities that hold seafood for restaurants and retailers, the benefits of seafood trade are found throughout the value chain.

NFI MEMBERS WORK TO STAMP OUT ECONOMIC FRAUD IN THE SEAFOOD INDUSTRY

The Better Seafood Board (BSB) was formed in 2007 to support the commitment of NFI members to abide by industry principles of economic integrity by not selling seafood that is short in weight or count, has the wrong name, or has been transshipped from one country to another to circumvent duties and tariffs. The BSB, an organization governed independently from NFI, provides the mechanism for industry’s partners in the supply chain – restaurants, retail operations, further manufacturers – to report suppliers committing economic fraud. Suppliers who cheat customers cheat the entire industry. Suppliers, restaurants and retailers who follow the rules often get penalized in the marketplace. Fair and lawful business practices are essential for ensuring consumer confidence in seafood – the entire supply chain is responsible for maintaining this confidence.
