Soft-Shell Clams
Scientific Name: Mya arenaria
The soft-shell clam, widely known as “Steamers”, prefer muddy and sandy areas for their habitat, this is where they bury themselves in title flats. Although extremely popular and abundant throughout New England’s coastal waters, soft-shell clams can be found in the Western Atlantic as far north as Canada down to the south and southeastern states of the US. This marine bivalve mollusk has a fragile calcium carbonate shell and is known to bury itself into up to 1ft of sand or mud as a form of protection from predators, and when the tide comes back in they stick out its siphon and take in the fresh seawater to retrieve the oxygen they need to survive.
